I posted a similar topic last year. I'm sure this will get the same smash, hit response.
But there ought to be a -simple- way to create new client or server-side 'actions' that will appear in the pop-up list for events?
In other IDEs I work with there are usually 'templates' one can create for automagically inserting code snippets.
I see the SDK hasn't been updated since 2004 so I ain't holding my breath, but I've got little UI bits of ASP that I use on virtually -every- page and it would be ever so much easier if I could simply create an 'Action' and not have to re-type the same stuff every time out.
After all, I thought time-saving was the whole point?
THANKS!

It sure would be nice, eh?
It would be nice if we could change the internal templates that CCS uses for generating the HTML, javascript and php/asp/etc code. There have been many times I just needed to make a simple change or addition to their code to get the effect I want (granted they have since added a few of these changes to their code), but since I can't change their internal template, I have to change the generated code, which results in that code not being updated unless I first remove my change and then put it back in.
I understand that they figure if they gave us that kind of control then we could just go crazy and reimplement all their stuff and create something better or support other languages -- you know, add a lot of new value to the product that they couldnt charge for, I guess (though personally, I wouldn't care if they took my changes and incorporated them. Maybe give me a discount on the product or something in return..)
It would be awesome if I could redo all the html and javascript templates to create, say, support for doing all the html using appcelerator widgets.
This is really the only thing I don't like about CCS (because all the other things I dont like, I could fix, if we had this ability).

I think you are being a bit unfair.
The SDK is published, and I assume that there are very little if any
changes, and if any that they are backwards compatible.
Obviously, it is possible to create plug-ins, since CodeCharge Tools is
doing it. Nothing is stopping you from doing so.
As for the templates, well, they are tied into their framework, so you could
not really decouple them.
I use another development system which is a 100% template based code
generator. They sell templates for ASP and PHP.
To be truthful, although it is much more open than CodeCharge since I can
write my own templates, I find CodeCharge more productive.
Instead of griping, have you taken the time to study the framework, the
classes, and their interrelations? You will find that once you learn how
CodeCharge works, you will be surprised at what you can do.
Before CCS 4 came out, we were already interfacing with Ajax, wrote our own
graphics, which wrap both InfoSoft Global's charting components and JpGraph
(so we have a common API), and PDF generation. We can generate client side
graphs in reports, and have the reports automatically scheduled and
delivered to our clients in PDF form with server side generated graphs.
SO, CodeCharge is quite extensible out of the box.
I don;t think it is a matter of Yes Software being afraid of having someone
outdo them. They have a very nice product, which is both powerful and
affordable. Others are writing add-ons for it, so no reason you cannot as
well.

Hi Benjamin,
I hope you aren't referring to -me-...
I'd like nothing more than to purchase add-ons, if they were available. I'm not trying to get something for nothing. And I'd take a crack at creating new actions, but... I've created several postings here asking for some guidance on getting started and only ever received ONE reply (from Walter) and -that- got nowhere.
It seems that the SDK, like the rest of the docs, is pretty inadequate. I wish they did like Soft Velocity and had some tutorials, or clinics on 'template writing'. I'd pay for that.
If -you- have any insights on getting started with creating 'actions', I'd love to hear it. Frankly, I spend most of my time working on other projects so I can't spend as much time researching this as I'd like. If there was -any- sort of tutelage I'd jump for joy.
Regards,
---JC
