Can I get feedback on whether it's worth the effort upgrading to 4.x in its current state.

Thanks,
Kevin

IMO (personal)
Yes it is worth upgrading, although from you signature I suspect you are in for a big step.
Have you not upgraded to CCS3.x?
Lot's of new things to master then.
I would!

W, just for interest sake - what makes the upgrade from 3.x to 4.x worthwhile? I'm struggling to answer this myself since most of the new functions do not work, is buggy or already outdated. I mean even Yes confirmed that some implementations were below standard case in point the modal pop up

So far we struggle to get a:

- working flash chart to look like we want to
- the update panel, although nice idea - struggles through when it is part of restricted pages and you lose state
- I already mentioned the modal popup
- the tab functions we deserted for another solution that IS documented

what else?

o yes the menu builder - can that be worth the upgrade?

@T (1001)
As all points you mention are valid....
My main motivation is:
The lack of updates to CCS 3.x

Not sure if this is a compliment or a complaint.

I held off on 3.x since, from the forums, it seemed buggy. I tried the trial version and liked the development environment - the editor was way faster. However, i've managed to do things with CSS, javascript and divs to get some of the same functionality (panels of fields on records) as well as starting to fool around with Ajax to update fields based on drop list choices without page reloads.

I can't afford to change to new version if it isn't close to rock-steady - debugging the development product AND debugging my own code would kill any profits realized.

someone tell whether i'm wrong here - thanks for all feedback so far.

K, what you have to keep in mind is that CCS implements Ajax (and Ajax-like) functionality by implementing other (read not CSS libraries e.g. Yahoo, Prototype etc.) frameworks.

They basically did/do what you did so far - I thinks most of our gripes are that the integration (the bit that was done) is not always stable again keeping mind you rely on external open source products that might change, might be abandoned.

Given the time between releases and the fact that 3 to 4 should have been a major release I think a lot of us expected an upgrade that would have leap frogged other technologies (much as v2 moved expectations in the industry for RAD)

For instance we decided on a light weight 'framework' SACK - which we adapt to get our ajax going - and then did some creative dhtml/js libraries for other stuff.

ps. Have a look at dhtmlgoodies.com they use the same framework as us

psps. we also realized that all AJAX is not good AJAX we are cutting back a lot of the flash for actual productivity features

pspsps. also just thought of it I believe that the need for AJAX has a lot to do with speed of the app e.g. not refreshing a whole screen etc. however we ran into a lot of problems with clients that relied on ad income when they lost just that - refreshes. Coming back to speed they internet is speeding up daily, does cost that you save on reloading time match up to cost of incompatiblities etc.? Facebook is a beatiful example of just how much js errors you can get on one page

man now I need a beer ;-)

At this point in time.... I'd have to say no. Wait untill most of the bugs have been resolved and ajax features have "matured" . I like living on the edge so jumped right in. Had some trouble since and tend not to use many of the ajax features because of lacking documentation and bugs.

I would upgrade to CCS3 though. It's stable and workes like a charm. I see no reason to stick with 2.3

Thanks for that Ron.

Can everyone else chime in on Version 3 then , while 4 goes through some more releases.

I'd like to get away from 2, to at least get a faster designer/editor screen and I have my own Ajax and javascript tricks for now. Is 3 nice and solid as a product ?

Well, I jumped off the fence and bought 3.2 - now the fun begins !!

having some headaches - mostly to do with generating into an empty 'www' folder - seems it doesn't like to generate into a previously filled site - i'm getting around that

Does anyone have a solution to this
next problem - as i develop i often change the names of controls (labels mostly) to better define what they hold. to use a dlookup function in their before show event i have often made the target of this function as EventCaller . so even if i changed the name down the road, the proper control would receive the value

now in 3.x i'm having to adjust this and explicitly select the control from the drop list in the target box - if i leave it as EventCaller then CCS is generating code like gridMyGridNameHere.EventCaller.value= which doesn't work !!

questions:
1) has anyone else been through this ?
2) is there some setting hidden in 3.x where i can still allow the EventCaller functionality in dlookup actions against controls ?

Thanks,
Kevin

BTW - 3.x did not fix the issue where, from time-to-time the system will get stuck in a Server Busy Switch To / Retry loop where i have to CTRL ALT DEL and end task on CCS.

ASP/MSAccess, you lost me, for specific things at least.

Not sure, CCS3 has been a while (LOL), but check
Menu->Tools->Options->General
1:Enable autocomplete, checked/unckecked, experiment to see if autocomplete is giving you this (generates the code to help you)
2:same place, make sure "close the FTP Upload..... is CHECKED, if not it will present a window which might be obscured and then waits for timeout..

3: Use your free support calls that came with the purchase @ http://support.yessoftware.com.

1. i'm typing in EventCaller in the target box on purpose - this use to be resolved at runtime and the control with the dlookup action would get the correct value AND i could rename the label control without having to edit the Target - oh well

2. yes, i have that set, however, this has always been an issue - it may only be my machine - but, it is also only CCS that jams this way

3. will do

K,
We are misunderstanding eachother.....
My 1,2,3 where not referring to your 1,2,3
They where 3 actions related to your #3...

You have me experimenting though, in PhP, to see what your EventCaller does or can or cannot do for me.
Thanks, another several hours of Xperiments.

BTW, change your signature to reflect you joining the 3.x community, haha

my mistake - (ignore my recent 1 response)

however, your 1,2 didn't help for the Server busy msg. - this happens when i'm publishing, not while code editing - it happens from time to time and did in 2.x too, i believe it happens before the ftp push begins

i'll try your 3, though i do believe i went through this when i bought 2.x

thanks

Ok, my 3 supposed to be resolved, it was in the Beta, and troubled me then, reported it and it was solved (then).

About your EventCaller, it is mentioned to be BestPractice as is $Component in PhP.
See Help File, search for Referencing objects.
I did the equivalent of your EventCaller in PhP, being, $Component

I just did a DLookup, Criteria: "user_id=". $Component-<GetValue()
that worked A-ok, so in ASP, that would be EventCaller.Value
(?????)
Just be careful in Grids though.

i'll fiddle with it when i get a moment - i've tried (today) to put just EventCaller in and it puts gridName. in front and .Value behind this when i look at the code.

thanks

we are using 4.0 but still .04

if you not planing to use AJAX go forit
for now we are only using Flash Chart (all other news/goodies not yet)

just be prepared to change some of your HTML if you use custom HTML or Client Side Modification.

Yes/CCS changed the format they named there Client Functions.

after the convertion/change and a few headache everthing is smooth now.

(i still i dont know why sometime few bugs coming back after been corrected in an older version so)

thanks Oper for your input - i'm busy touching up now ....

as for Ajax, i started coding in my own stuff in 2.x using scripts from Dynamic Drive website - small routines that jazzed up the CodeCharge projects a bit.

One last whine there use to be tool tips when i floated over file names in the Project Explorer - this was handy cause i could size it nice and skinny and still be able to make out what the file was - many files begin with the same name, oh well - please let me know if this is a setting somewhere

Tooltips is set in Toolbox->options.
Will cater for tooltips on menu items, The toolboxes (builders, forms, html) and the Properties.
Not the filenames in project explorer though, afaik.
A suggestion:
Use menu Workspace (see Helpfile), create a workspace with the toolbox + properties closed and the explorer at your favourite width (all readable), save that as slot 1.
Then create another workspace with the explorer closed and the rest opened as workspace 2.
You can then switch with CTRL+n from one to the other faster than it takes a tooltip to appear.
